What happens if you try to play a virtual console game and you don’t buy one of those old-school looking remote controls?

Depends on the game. Some are capable with the Wii remote, while others require the Classic Controller. The necessary controller is specified on the info page for the game.
i don’t think console games are compatible with the remote, thats why nintendo created the classic controller. $20 retail.
some games allow you to do that. Pay attention when you buy a game, it will tell you what controllers it is compatible with. You’r best bet would be to use the gamecube controller or go out and buy a classic controller.
The NES games are compatible with the Wiimote. If you turn the Wiimote on its side with the D-pad on the left and the 2 buttons on the right, it’s set up just like the old NES pads.
Some games, mostly the ones originally for the NES can use the Wii Remote, but most others can’t. If you have a Game Cube, you can use its controller for most games.
you can use it forsome of them others you need to buy a wii classic controller or a gamecube controller.
