What are the criteria for unlocking vehicles and characters in Mario Kart Wii?

I recently bought Mario Kart Wii and have gotten first place in all cups and all classes (including mirror). There are still a lot of things missing. How do I unlock these?

Go to labels and find unlockable characters or unlock karts and bikes. They have great video tips too it’s really a good website.
Have you tried racing the ghosts in the time trials?
